What is inductive Bible study?
God’s eternal, inerrant Word is your guidebook for all of life, and inductive study gives you the key to understanding that guide. This study method brings you directly to the Word of God first, before learning from another’s understanding or interpretation of the text. To put it another way, inductive Bible study uses the Bible as your primary source, the actual Bible before books about the Bible. Now, this is significant because when you study the Bible first, you have context to evaluate what others write or say about the Bible. There are a lot of books about the Bible and about ideas found in the Bible. But, inductive study puts you in the Bible first, engaging directly with the text. That’s why we call it discovering truth for yourself.
Why study the Bible for myself? (Shouldn’t I leave that to the experts?)
To know God. God has always intended Himself to be understood. The Bible is for the people, not just the spiritually elite. Martin Luther translated the Bible into German in 1534 because he wanted the entire German speaking world to have access to the Word of God.
To grow spiritually. A consistent study of the Word of God produces spiritual growth like nothing else will.
To gain confidence. personal study of the Bible produces confidence in the Christian. You no longer are dependent on the studies of others, but are confident that you know “Thus saith the Lord” because you studied it for yourself.
To ward off deception. People who study and know the Scriptures are not easily deceived. They recognize truth.
To obey God. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
